A CALL FOR STREAM CONVENERS AND EVENTS
What?
What is the Art of Management and Organization Conference?
September 2002 saw the beginning of the Art of Management and Organization Conference in London. Our aim was, and continues to be, the exploration and promotion of the arts (in the most inclusive sense) as a means of understanding management and organization(al) life.
This conference has given rise to a vibrant global community of praxis – including scholars and practitioners. The conference has resided in London (2002), Paris (2004), Krakow (2006), Banff (2008) and in 2010 – we will travel to Istanbul, Turkey.
Why and Where?
With each new conference in the series we aim to offer a different experience for our attendees.
The fourth conference at Banff drew on the relationships between the conference and the outdoors. In 2010 the aim is to change our focus again and this time to draw on the unique splendor of Istanbul.
Istanbul is something very different. It is a vibrant, cosmopolitan and diverse city. Apart from being historically and architecturally spectacular, with a skyline of mosques and minarets, Istanbul is the only city in the world that lies on two continents – the gateway between Asia and Europe. This sizzling Turkish metropolis of spice markets, bazaars, mosques and mosaics is spread over seven hills and surrounded on three sides by water. It is astonishingly beautiful, exotic and utterly captivating. A bonus for us is that in 2010 Istanbul will be the European City of Culture.
On this occasion the intent is to offer optional excursions prior to and following the conference. Firstly, a sight-seeing tour which will include visits to the main tourist sites such as the Blue Mosque and Aya (Hagia) Sofia. At the close of the conference a visit to Istanbul Modern with it’s incomparable collection of Turkish art.
If you have never experienced Istanbul before (or would like to visit again), then you must come to the Fifth conference in this biennial series. We can guarantee that once experienced it'll be impossible to break free from its spell!
How?
How can I participate in the Fifth Art of Management and Organization Conference?
This is the call for stream conveners and events, which is the initial step in designing the Conference.
EVENTS
Diversity of presentation and content has been central to the conference series, therefore we are calling for proposals for a variety of events – both traditional and innovative – that can use the space we have at our disposal.
STREAMS
We invite proposals from people who are keen to lead a stream of interest, which might follow conventional academic practice or alternatively challenge our thinking. Our aim is to encourage the experimental alongside the traditional. The facilities in Istanbul and santralistanbul certainly offer this opportunity. As such we would be particularly interested in proposals that are relevant (in some way) to the location. There are many ways in which Istanbul might inspire you - not least its pivotal relationship between East and West, between Europe and Asia.
Streams of interest might be new to the conference or alternatively old friends returning.
Normally streams will be developed by a team of stream conveners [or at least two people] rather than one person taking on all of the responsibility.
Our aim is to construct a broad, rich and diverse programme which is able to accommodate both the formal and the informal, together with the traditional and innovative. As always we like to challenge ourselves and those who attend the conference.
The Venue:
Our venue for the conference offers a combination of formal and informal spaces that characterise the versatility necessary for a conference of our nature.
santralistanbul is an arts and cultural complex situated within the Silahtarağa campus of Istanbul Bilgi University, a site that was formerly the first power station of the Ottoman Empire. Arts, cultural, educational and social buildings of santralistanbul are all housed in the facilities of the former Silahtarağa Power Station.
